            Yoga TidBits

True yoga isn't just a workout. It is an ancient Indian philosophy espousing an eight-limbed approach to conscious living:

First Limb: Yama refers to ethical standards.

Second Limb: Niyama refers to self discipline and spiritual observances.

Third Limb: Asana is the postures we practice.

Fourth Limb: Pranayama is Breath Control

Fifth Limb: Pratyahara is about withdrawing ourselves from any external information so we can hear the sounds from within.

Sixth Limb: Dharana is about fixing the mind to one specific point.

Seventh Limb: Dhyana is meditation with a purpose to interrupt the fluctuations of the normal mental activity such as sensory knowledge, memory, and imagination.

Eighth Limb: Samadhi is a state of consciousness where individual awareness dissolves into the great Whole.  Although there are different stages of this consciousness, the ultimate result is the state of enlightenment.

While one realizes that Samadhi is not a permanent state and it takes dedication and effort to train the mind and go deep inside, one could have it as an ultimate goal.

Seventh Limb: Dhyana is meditation with a purpose to interrupt the fluctuations of the normal mental activity such as sensory knowledge, memory, and imagination. Like any other limb in yoga, meditation is a systematic process in itself, which takes practice and patience to learn. The process leads to train our minds to come back to us when we tell it to and to sit still, even if for just a few seconds at a time.

Next week, I will have a short explanation of the last of the eight limbs.

Fifth Limb: Pratyahara is about withdrawing ourselves from any external information so we can hear the sounds from within.

Sixth Limb: Dharana is about fixing the mind to one specific point. This could be something internal, like part of the body or a chakra, or something external like a picture, statue or another object. It's not so important what this object is that we are focusing on; the purpose is to quiet the mind with this total concentration.

When we focus the mind intensely into one point, the rest of the mind tends to quiet down. When we practice concentration like this, there is less room for other thoughts, memories, and planning that the mind tends to otherwise be busy with.

Next week, I will have a short explanation of the seventh of the eight limbs.

Lunch Club Date

Next Thursday, Sept. 20 at Shorty's on Lawrenceville Hwy.

This week's yoga and more

Hello

Here is this week's schedule:

Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 6PM at Habersham

Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11:30AM at Habersham

Third Limb: Asana is the postures we practice.

Fourth Limb: Pranayama is Breath Control

Fifth Limb: Pratyahara is about withdrawing ourselves from any external information so we can hear the sounds from within.  During asana practice, we release physical tension which leads to quieting the mind. When body is free of tension and mind is calm, we are prepared for the next phases of yoga. Cultivate elements of pratyahara by leaving the external world behind, and being fully present on your mat. Be aware of your senses and observe your reactions to them.

Next week, I will have a short explanation of the sixth of the eight limbs.
